Hot Water Cylinders

Hot Water Cylinders

Often found in modern houses airing cupboards. Big and usually covered in a yellow foam. May contain immersion heating element.

It is possible to buy a jacket for hot water cylinders. This is one of the simplest and cheapest things that can be done to cut fuel bills and save energy. Some cylinders already have foam sprayed on them and so do not need a jacket. The pipes that enter and leave the cylinder are often insulated as well.

Electric radiator

If hot water is stored in a cylinder, it will usually be fitted with a thermostat to control the water temperature. For water that is heated by electricity, the thermostat will be inside the tank. If water is heated in a combination (combi) boiler, the heating control for the water is present on the boiler.

The temperature selected will determine the temperature of the hot water coming out of the hot water taps. Ideally, it should be set to 60°C (140°F). (Certainly not lower than 55°C as this could cause Legionnaires Disease.)
